Understanding Furniture Through Drawing & Construction

Furniture design is a craft that blends art, engineering, and storytelling. Every chair tells a story—of its maker, its materials, and the techniques that brought it to life. Yet, despite the wealth of knowledge embedded in great designs, I found a surprising lack of educational books that break down furniture construction in a way that is both visually engaging and deeply informative.

This book is my contribution to the design community, a way to bridge that gap. Through detailed drawings, exploded views and elevations, I aim to decode the essence of chair design. The book contains 8 iconic designs, each chair has been decoded carefully with hand done drawings (on paper) and water colour renderings. Whether you are a student, an aspiring furniture maker, or a seasoned designer, this book offers insights into joinery, proportions, and the structural understanding behind some of the most iconic and thoughtfully crafted chairs.

By studying and illustrating these designs, I hope to provide not just technical understanding but also inspiration. Great furniture is not just about aesthetics; it’s about integrity, craftsmanship, and the relationship between form and function. This book is an invitation to explore these principles and apply them to your own creative journey.

Welcome to Chair Decoding. Let’s take a closer look at the craft of furniture design—one drawing at a time.
